AAPI Stop the Hate Orange County Roundtable Discussion with OCHC

Stop the Hate Campaign

In recent years, mental illness and hate crime in OC has increased drastically, becoming a major threat to public health and safety. In response to this crisis, OCHC actively participated in the “HEART OC” Coalition for strategy planning with other Asian Pacific Islander service agencies to raise awareness for mental illness, prevent suicide, increase knowledge of OC mental health system and resources, decrease stigma, and facilitate help-seeking behaviors among OC’s diverse ethnic populations.

OCHC has served the OC Chinese community tirelessly and effectively over the years, and its service and programs have been affirmed by many. In early 2023, OCAPICA granted funding from OC Health Care Agency to support OCHC’s continued effort in mental health promotion, hate crime prevention/intervention, peer mentor training, and resource navigation.

Love for Taiwan Mission

The Love for Taiwan project was started by the OCHC in 2022 to support three remote churches in Chia-Yi, Yi-Lan, and Nantou, providing financial support for after-class mentoring of under-privileged children through zoom meetings. Most of the children have learning disabilities or come from broken families. More than 30 brothers and sisters from different churches serve as online counselors, establishing long term relationships and providing encouragement and support through activities such as monthly caring meetings, birthday celebrations, and English lessons. The Love for Taiwan project will continue to enlist the help of Christians in North America to support and participate in mission efforts in remote areas of Taiwan.
