One thing that I’ve learned from YMM part 2 that I think will stick with me for a while is our very last class, which talked about facing rejection and staying resilient. I felt this lesson was something very meaningful to me and highly applicable to all our lives, AND something that schools don’t really emphasize enough.

From YMM, I learned how important it was to have appropriate support systems and also have self-compassion. Now, I’m not afraid of rejection anymore because I know how to deal with it and treat it like a learning experience.

Youth Mind Matters is a program that dedicates to raise awareness for mental health among teenagers. I am glad that I decided to participate in YMM. I became more tolerant and careful when it came to situations that involved mental health issues. I was going through some serious relationship issues in school and I couldn’t find a way to feel better. I was trapped and lost. The activities we did in YMM helped me walk out of the dark place I was in and gave me tips on how to counter those issues in the future. We did a variety of activities to understand mental issues and correct ways to approach them. We acted in role plays, shared our stories, and participated in group discussions. Our counselors shared their stories about mental health issues they were involved in. The stories were very powerful and impactful to me. After this session, I would become a better mental health advocate by growing into a better listener to people around me. Being a good listener seems very easy. However, it requires a person to be concentrated and thoughtful when they are listening. I will be more respectful to others’ opinions.
